Ice Axe Skills

Avalanche Awareness

Sunday, March 15 & Saturday, March 28 | 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. | $16, $14 LIBERTY-Eligible

Learn how to safely navigate snow slopes using an ice axe in this hands-on mountaineering skills course. We will cover self-belay, self-arrest, glissading techniques, avalanche rescue procedures, and other foundational skills essential for basic mountaineering. This class is required for participants planning to join our Mount St. Helens climb in May and Mount Adams climb in June. Additionally, attendance at one of our Avalanche Awareness classes is required prior to taking this workshop.

Please note that this class includes mandatory pre-trip homework. Before the course, you will receive additional resources and be asked to check the avalanche forecast and watch several instructional videos related to the skills we will practice in the field. Completing this homework is crucial to your success, as these skills will be tested during the course.

Participants should dress warmly in layered clothing, including a base layer, insulating layer, and waterproof outer layer. You will be exposed to snow, so it is important that your insulating layers remain dry.
