Recreation Assistant (Outdoor Guide)

Location: Naval Station Everett - Community Recreation

Pay Grade: NF-0189-02

This position is located in Arlington, Washington, approximately 40 minutes northwest of NAS Everett. The position keeps military patrons healthy, fit and fun through outdoor program’s events and activities. Employee privileges include access to base facilities such as recreation centers, gyms, restaurants, and discount tickets to sporting and entertainment events.

Brief Description of Duties: Assist in planning and supervision of a variety of outdoor recreation related activities and programs. Activities include hiking, rope courses, climbing activity, back packing, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing trips, guiding canoe and boat trips, leading fishing and hunting groups, supervising snow skiing trips, and providing instruction in basic outdoor recreation classes and workshops. Incumbent will carry out programs and activities by encouraging patrons to participate, keeping order, and ensuring their safety. Assist in recruitment and utilization of volunteers for MWR outdoor recreation activities and programs. Incumbent will attend all pre-trip meetings related to incumbent’s area of responsibility. Recommends purchasing of equipment, supplies, and resale merchandise needed to support these outdoor rec. activities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements: Applicant will have the abilities to communicate with patrons of all ages and interests. A minimum of one-year professional experience in the assigned recreational skill is required. Assignments may include, but are not limited to: canoeing, kayaking, rope courses, backpacking, backcountry skiing, snow-shoeing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing, mountain biking etc. Alpine tower experience a plus. Must possess leadership/instruction skills at sufficient level to lead or assist in the instruction of skill classes, trips, clinics and workshops. The possession of a Wilderness First Responder certificate is highly desirable. Must be knowledgeable and efficient in operation of computer, GPS, transceiver, and other related job equipment. Ability to satisfactorily complete background checks to include a National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI).

Conditions of Employment: This work requires considerable physical exertion while instructing and guiding participants in a variety of outdoor activities (I.e., camping, canoeing, cycling, skiing, etc.). Must be able to lift and carry program-related equipment and gear up to 75 pounds. Employee will operate an automobile during the day-to-day coordination of events and activities, so valid license is required. Position requires climbing ropes course or Alpine Tower. Position will also work at Jim Creek Resort.
